UmbroPlay at Wembley with Umbro Fives
Monday, 17 March 2008.
The Football Association and Umbro launched The FA UMBRO Fives competition, a nationwide tournament aimed at finding the best five-a-side football team in the country.
This small sided football tournament, now in its second year, will see teams do battle up and down the country over the coming weeks all intent on reaching one goal - a place in The FA UMBRO Fives Finals at the home of English football - Wembley Stadium.
The tournament kicks-off later this month and is open to both men’s and women’s teams of any ability. The road to Wembley begins with a series of local qualifying heats taking place around the county from mid-March through to the end of May. This year for the first time teams can enter the heats online by simply logging on to www.TheFA.com/UMBROFives.
The winners of these qualifying heats will then progress through to one of nine regional finals which will be contested during June and July.
At the regional finals teams will battle it out for the ultimate prize in five-a-side football – a place in the Wembley Finals later this year – where 24 men's teams and eight women's teams will seek to emulate last year’s winners Watford Ladies and MDU and win this season’s FA UMBRO Fives title. And, as an added bonus, eight lucky losing teams knocked out during the local qualifiers will be selected at random to play in their own mini-final, also at Wembley.
For your chance to put you and your team mates on the road to Wembley glory, simply enter your team and find out about your local heats by logging on to www.TheFA.com/UMBROFives.
Dermot Collins, Head of Small Sided Football, The Football Association, commented: “The FA UMBRO Fives competition is a tournament which I am sure will once again capture the imagination of five-a-aside teams throughout the country. Playing small sided football is a great way of having fun while at the same time improving the basic skill level of players. The chance to play at Wembley is the ultimate dream for any football fan and Fives will help make this dream come true for a few lucky teams later this year.”
