Deaf Kent Girls kick off first season

4:15 PM, Tuesday, 17 November 09. Disability football

Maidstone United FC entered the first ever all-girls team in the Under 16 division of the Kent Junior Disability League. The team, who are coached by Matt Webster, are all deaf and have only been training together for a few weeks.

Disability Development Officer for the Kent County FA, Stephanie Gadd said “ This is a fantastic achievement for the girls, the club and the Kent FA. At KCFA we are working hard to involve all kids in football, regardless of their disability.”

Maidstone United FC achieved the prestigious Deaf Friendly Football Club award from the National Deaf Children’s Society in 2008 and now has a thriving deaf section. This caters for girls and boys aged between 8 and 16.

It’s hoped the new team will inspire other girls to get involved in disability football – with the ultimate aim being to create a girls’ section of the League.
