Football Is Coming Home To Sheppey

It is the busiest time of the year for Leagues and Divisions Committees across the county as the Cup Final season is underway. No more so than for the

The Dore Metals Services Sheppey Sunday League have had to wave goodbye to Central Park in Sittingbourne which had been the home of their Cup Finals for well over 10 years.

After much thought and deliberation the finals have been moved to Woodstock Park, who have done a sterling job in getting the ground to a high standard and with the help of Maurice Dunk the league and will thus host four of its finals there this season.

The league was also approached by Sheppey & Sheerness United FC to host all Finals there, which would be like a ‘coming home’ for them.

Historically, all the Sheppey Sunday League Finals were played at Botany Road, which was the home of Sheppey United FC. A lovely ground which everyone enjoyed and was sold in the early 90’s by Sheppey United FC for housing. From the early 90’s all of Finals were played at Sittingbourne FC.

Last year’s Cup Final winners on the Island at Botany Road were Queen Phillippa FC winning the League and Senior Cup and Teynham Wanderers FC winning the Junior Cup.

Now, under the new management at Sheppey & Sheerness United, their hard work has provided a great new stadium back on the Island, after the merger of AFC Sheppey & Sheerness East FC.

So in making history – football is returning to the island as the League will host two Finals at Holm Park, the first on the island for over 20 years.

The first Final to be played on Sheppey, making Sheppey Sunday League History after 20 years is the Brett King Senior Charity Cup Final between Halfway House FC and Park Regis (Kemsley) FC. Kick off is at 2.45pm at Holm Park.

Fans are encouraged to get down to the final and be part of making a little bit of football history in Swale.
