Kent Ladies Beat Navy on Coast

Kent FA
Kent ladies come back from Portsmouth with all 3 points against the Royal Navy

Kent FA ladies won a crucial away match against Royal Navy 3-2, with goals from Millie Waud, Amy Russ and Charlie Myhill doing the damage. Kent had to overcome a few issues before the match, with players unavailable due to work and injury and kick off being pushed back to 8:15 as the coach didn’t arrive until 7:35 due to traffic but put in a spirited performance in the circumstances.

Royal Navy took the lead through a 30 yard strike before Waud equalised before the break, 2 quick goals from Russ and Myhill in the second half proving enough despite a second Navy goal 15 minutes from time. The victory made it 2 wins from 2 for Cori Daniels side, who are now right in contention for the Southern Counties league with Army FA and Essex FA to play at the turn of the year.

As ever, Russ was at the centre of most things good for Kent and had a couple of early chances, first a low drive towards the corner was well held saved by the keeper, who later made a better save when Russ was clean through on goal, she tried to take it round the keeper but she plucked it off her toe. The hosts did have a few attempts from distance but 10 minutes before half time Royal Navy took the lead slightly against the run of play but in spectacular fashion, with a dipping strike from 30 yards hitting the roof of the net, giving Davies no chance.

Kent was not behind for long and equalised 7 minutes later from a corner, Myhill with the corner and Waud forced it home from the near post. The teams went in level at the break but 2 minutes in the visitors took the lead. A clearance from Moloney turned into a great through ball which Russ got onto, and she held off the defender before lofting the ball into the corner. On the hour Kent extended their lead, Myhill was quick to latch onto a poor defensive header in the box to get a shot in, the keeper made the save but Myhill was able to force the ball home.

Royal Navy responded well however and got a goal back minutes later, Kent gave possession away trying to counter, and the low drive from the edge of the box arrowed into the far corner. Kent had chances to kill off the match but both Russ and Alabaster guided shots wide after beating the offside trap. 5 minutes from time the hosts hit the bar as they were searching for the equaliser but in the end Kent were able to hold them off.
