Celebrating Women and Girls Football in Kent
In a dazzling display of energy, passion, and unity, the Kent FA's International Women's Day Football Extravaganza, sponsored by GoCardless, brought together 379 women and girls of all ages for a day of celebration, friendly competition, and empowerment.
The event, held on March 8th at the training ground of the London City Lionesses, attracted an enthusiastic crowd eager to participate in a festival that celebrated the progress of the women and girls’ game.
The day kicked off with a Wildcats festival for 5-11-year-olds, followed by sessions for Squad Girls aged 11-14. These sessions featured a series of exciting skills drills and short games, showcasing the talents of both rising young players and seasoned ballers. Throughout the day, participants also enjoyed festivals in open-aged football, walking football, and beginners' leagues.
This extravaganza highlighted the growing strength and depth of women's and girls' football. Spectators were treated to thrilling matches, dramatic goals, and inspiring teamwork, embodying the true spirit of the sport.
Reflecting on the day, Rebecca Moore, Football Development Officer for Women & Girls, remarked on the event's significance: “On Saturday, we witnessed the strength, passion, and spirit of women's and girls' football in Kent. The energy across the day and on the pitches was electric. Every pass, goal, and cheer were confirmation of the increasing inclusion within our game. The event highlighted that regardless of age and ability, the game's future is unstoppable within the County. Together, in aid of International Women's Day we united our football community, broke down barriers and inspired the next generation to dream big in the game we all love.”
In addition to the festivals, the event focused on development and empowerment. Two Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops—"Supporting Female Players" and "Stepping Over The Sidelines"—were led by experienced coaches, who provided attendees with advice, support, and valuable education. An inspirational talk from UEFA A Licensed Coach, Natalie Curtis from London City Lionesses, and industry leaders reinforced messages of perseverance, equality, and self-belief, motivating attendees to pursue their footballing dreams.
The International Women's Day Women and Girls Football Extravaganza was more than just a sporting event; it was a movement aimed at promoting inclusivity and community engagement.
The event's overwhelming success has set a benchmark for future celebrations of female football in Kent. We are already exploring ways to expand next year's edition, including more teams, wider outreach programs, and greater involvement from professional players and coaches.
We want to thank our fantastic event sponsor, GoCardless, who supported this event and participated by hosting a kit design station for young players. In response to the day’s success, GoCardless reflected on the event with Catherine Birkett, Chief Financial Officer, saying “It was incredible to see hundreds of women, girls and their loved ones turn out to support the extravaganza and the buzz was great. It’s testament to the good work Kent FA has done to grow the game, and we were so happy to play a part in the event. I’ve watched my daughter come through the ranks of the women’s game from grassroots and academies to now play in the National League, and it was wonderful to have conversations with other parents, coaches and volunteers who share the passion that we have for widening participation, particularly for girls and women.”
We also extend our gratitude to:
- London City Lionesses for hosting the event
- Village Hotel (Maidstone) for joining us with their Spin to Win activity
- Pro 2 Pro for supporting the coaching sessions for Wildcats and Squad Girls
- All the coaches and referees who dedicated their time to the event
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all the participants. This event was for you, and we are incredibly grateful for the positive feedback and the opportunity to play a small part in your football journey.
The event will be featured in episode 7 of the Kent Football Show so make sure you tune in on Thursday 27 March at 2 pm to see if your team feature.
As the final whistle blew on an unforgettable day, one thing was clear: women's and girls' football in Kent is thriving, and events like these are crucial for inspiring future generations.
