K Sports Win South East Groundsman of the Year!

After winning the Kent Groundsman of the Year Award, Scott Byers and the Grounds Team from K Sports have won the South East Groundsman of the Year Award.

This means that Scott has been invited up to the home of English Football, St George’s Park, for an afternoon of learning new techniques and meeting Groundsmen who help maintain Premier League clubs. Along with finding out if he has been successful in the National Groundsman of the Year Award.

Scott and his small team of staff have maintained the 28 acre site at K Sports through a challenging period of transition. With significant regeneration and development works taking place over the past year, the team has had to manage their resources to cover a vast space and ensure new professional standards are applied to meet the demands of clubs across the county. With building works taking place, Scott has worked tirelessly to maintain quality playing surfaces, so teams across the football pyramid are not too disrupted by the strategic changes taking place.

Looking after grass pitches and the surrounding grounds across K Sports is a task Scott has administered with great skill and resourcefulness. Additionally, he and his team have also seamlessly taken on the challenge of supporting the introduction of a FIFA Pro 3G pitch. Where many would struggle to deal with potential disruption and problems that inevitably occur with a development of this scale, every hour was worked to guarantee a surface to make the county proud. It was officially opened in November 2016 and has already welcomed hundreds of players – of all ages, ability and gender – and will continue to do some thanks to his commitment, knowledge and ambition.

Whilst many ground staff are given very specific targets and jobs to maintain and develop their facilities, Scott and his team have gone above and beyond to create opportunities for the Kent football community. Responding to all the change of the last year, Scott and his team have implemented new systems and processes to ensure more people, from youth to adult, men’s to women’s football, can play at K Sports.

Whilst their home Football Club, K Sports FC, had to be patient and play games away at the start of the 2016/17 season, Scott and the team at K Sports developed a far superior home for them to return to. This led the First Team to a successful 13 match winning run, which cannot be put down simply as good form. It was a combination of factors, including far better facilities and a surface that is positively commented upon by every opposition team who’ve visited so far. Besides the hundreds of recreational players from across the community who enjoy the variety the facility has to offer.

Congratulations to Scott and his team, and we wish you the best of luck in the National Groundsman of the Year Awards, which are due to take place on the 16th August at St. Georges Park.
